Their main distinguishing features are the setting in which care is given and the professionals who provide the service. Primary care is the first-contact, continuous and coordinated care of individuals. Community care, on the other hand, is linked to a much wider social network. Primary and community care, therefore, are not synonymous with general practice, but they do subsume it (Mackenzie and Ross 1997). Consequently, primary care and community care are distinguished in this book because the service context influences workforce planning and development
