Head and neck cancer support group participants' satisfaction survey

Cancer of the head and neck area is thought to be one of the most challenging and difficult cancers to live with. The severity of the side effects of treatment can be extremely debilitating for the person with possible loss of speech, swallow and facial disfigurment. Quality of life can be hugely impaired for both the person with the cancer and his/her spouses family and friends (2). As a clinical nurse specialist in head and neck cancer it became very apparent that this group of people felt very isolated and many expressed wished to be able to talk to someone who had similar experiences. Support groups are more common among other tumour groups. A head and neck cancer support group was formed in St. Luke's two years ago. The group structure and style was dictated by patients and their family/friends that attended the first meeting (Fifty delegates). Two years later I undertook a short survey with attendees at a support meeting to check satisfaction with the current group style
